New Earth

About New Earth

Huisache is the first to break the winter spell in San Antonio, bursting into puffs of sweet yellow along the roadsides in February while the lawns still sleep tan and low. Under much of the city sits heavy dark clay, and after the winter rains it holds moisture like a sponge, waiting. A business called New Earth fits a place whose lawns live or die by what lies underfoot, from that dense clay to chalky caliche. Its lawn care at this turning point, a low cleanup mow and the dead debris raked from the turf, gives spring growth a clean place to begin. When March warms the ground, green comes up through the tan like a fresh page.
