Tall loblolly pines tower over Livingston's yards, and they shed their needles in rusty drifts that blanket roofs, beds and lawns alike. G and L Enterprises keeps up with that steady fall of needles and cones, mowing and clearing so the grass gets the light it needs between the long tree shadows. In early spring the dogwoods open white through the Polk County woods, and ground raked clean beneath them looks like a place set for company. Lake Livingston spreads wide to the west, and on still summer mornings a haze drifts off the water and lingers in the pines. What remains is open, green grass in the heart of the Piney Woods, the red clay hidden and the tall trunks standing guard around it.
