On the east side, the Tandy Hills Natural Area still guards a remnant of the old Fort Worth prairie, and in April its rolling slopes erupt in wildflowers beneath a skyline that seems near enough to touch. Texas Turf Rangers carry a little of that open-country spirit into the city's lawns, riding herd on turf so it grows in thick and holds up through North Texas weather. Grass here has plenty to contend with: a scorching August, dry spells that stretch for weeks, and kids and dogs who treat every yard as their own range. A lawn looked after steadily through the hot months becomes turf a household actually lives on, with backyard football, bare feet and long June twilights. Every ranger needs a territory, and this outfit has staked its claim on the lawns of Fort Worth.
