Dripping Springs calls itself the Gateway to the Hill Country, and in late October you can feel the gate swing open: the first real norther blows across the hills, the cedar elms in the creek bottoms go butter-yellow, and the old storefronts on Mercer Street catch a lower, gold-tinted sun. Landcraft does landscaping for this edge-of-the-hills town, where the ground turns hard a spade's depth down and every yard has to earn its green. Autumn suits this kind of work, because new plantings settle in while the soil still holds summer's warmth and beds can be shaped before the cold months arrive. When spring comes back up the highway, a yard planted in fall is already a step ahead of it.
