Before the subdivisions, the land around Denton belonged to the Cross Timbers, a ragged belt of post oak and blackjack oak running down through the prairie, and plenty of those stubborn old trees still shade its yards. Frenchy's Lawn and Tree looks after both stories of the place: the grass underfoot and the canopy overhead. In January, with the leaves down and every branch drawn in black against a pale sky, a tree shows plainly where it needs a cut, and trimming lifts heavy limbs off roofs and driveways before an ice storm can test them. Spring brings the work back down to the ground, to mowing and tidy edges beneath shade that finally has room to breathe. A post oak pruned with care above a neat, close-cut lawn is a Denton yard standing at its full height.
