Summer evenings in Amarillo run long and golden, and downtown the crowd at Hodgetown cheers on the Sod Poodles, a ball club named for the prairie dogs that still sit up sentry-straight out on the plains. West of town along I-40, the spray-painted Cadillacs stand nose-down in their field, catching the last red light. Back in the neighborhoods, the smell of cut grass hangs in the cooling air. Spanky's Landscape has a name with a grin in it, and its work is landscaping for Amarillo yards, with mowing, trimming and beds kept in shape through the hot months. Nothing fussy about the goal, just a yard you'd want to sit out in when the sun drops behind the Panhandle and the sky tries every color it has.
