Sandhill cranes stroll across the lawns of Wesley Chapel as though they were the inspectors, tall and gray with red caps, calling in a rattling voice that carries over the rooftops. Not long ago much of this Pasco County ground was pasture and pine flatwoods; now it is neighborhoods, each yard a fresh patch of Florida waiting for someone to look after it. The Garden Gnome Landscaping does that looking-after by mowing grass and tending the landscaping, under a name that hints a garden can be a little playful as well as neat. Spring afternoons here are warm and bright, with Cypress Creek winding through its swamp nearby. It is a good season for a mown yard and beds brought back to shape, the cranes nodding along as they pass.
