Shalimar is a small town tucked among the bayous at the edge of Choctawhatchee Bay, close enough to Eglin Air Force Base that the roar of jets overhead is simply part of the day. In March the azaleas go off in every shade of pink, longleaf and slash pines shed needles across the lawns, and the Panhandle's brief spring gives the grass its cue to wake. P & D Enterprises keeps yards here in good order through it all — mowing, trimming, clearing pine straw and leaves, and shaping shrubs so the house stays in view. Panhandle summers run long and humid, and growth follows the heat; a regular cut keeps it from getting ahead. The payoff is a neat lawn beneath tall pines, its edges crisp against the fallen needles.
