At mid-century, Sarasota gave its name to an architecture movement: low, open houses by Paul Rudolph and his peers, with deep overhangs, jalousie windows and walls of glass that let the garden walk right into the living room. The Berryman Design Group LLC works in a city still shaped by that idea, where the line between house and landscape is meant to blur. Design starts with how a property is lived in and seen — the view from the breakfast table, the path from car to door, the patch of shade wanted over a reading chair — and then turns to the plants, lawn and bed lines that answer those needs. Mid-century or brand new, a home here gains from a plan that frames its spaces rather than crowding them. Once the drawings become planted beds and clean lawn curves, the yard feels as if it had always been there.
