Palatka sits where the St. Johns River makes its broad turn, and on late-winter mornings a mist rides the water under the Memorial Bridge until the sun burns it away. By February the azaleas of Ravine Gardens begin to blaze pink and magenta down the steep ravine walls, and the whole town turns its attention to color. The name sounds like a posy, a small bouquet, which is not a bad thing for a front yard to resemble when the azalea festival crowds come through.
