An hour before a June sunrise in Jacksonville, sprinkler heads lift out of the turf, tick through their arcs and lay a fine silver mist over the St. Augustine grass while the street is still dark. Action Irrigation & Landscaping works on that hidden network of pipe, valves and spray heads, because this is sandy ground that swallows water almost as fast as it falls. On the watering days the water district allows, every zone has to put its water where the roots can reach it, not on the sidewalk and not down the gutter. Around the irrigation comes the landscaping — beds shaped, plantings set, the whole yard arranged so the green and the water make sense together. By the time the heat climbs and the cicadas start their buzzing, the lawn has drunk deep and glistens, set for another scorching day.
