In a dry August, the Still River runs low and slow by the time it reaches the Housatonic in New Milford, and lawns on the slopes above start going the color of straw. Horsey irrigation works on exactly that problem, getting water to the grass and garden so a yard stays green while the rivers drop. Irrigation is lawn care at the root: the right amount of water, in the right place, in the cool of early morning. Most of the work happens out of sight, and the proof shows up above ground, in a lawn that is still soft underfoot in the heat of late summer.
