On an early June morning in Monroe, dew still sits on the grass along the old stone walls that farmers stacked when this was field and pasture. Duncan's Landscaping is out in it by then, mowers running, working the long front lawns that sweep down toward the roads near the white-steepled church on the town green. Monroe runs to deep lots and winding roads off Route 111, where a lawn can run a long way before it meets the trees. The rhythm is steady: cut, trim, edge, blow the walk clean, and by mid-morning the yard has a fresh-shaved look the whole street can see. It is a plain pleasure, a straight line of grass meeting a gray stone wall.
