The craft lies in keeping turf full and green when the weather turns dry, mowed high enough to shade its own roots, with outlines holding their shape through the heat. At the close of a long summer day, as the shadows of the fruit trees stretch downhill, grass that is still soft underfoot feels like a small victory.
