Petaluma sits close to the line where Sonoma County meets Marin, and the trees of both seem to gather here — valley oaks out in the pastures, tall old street trees shading the Victorian blocks west of downtown. Sonoma-Marin Arborists works among them as an arborist business, with care for the trees overhead and the lawns spread beneath them. November shows the work at its clearest: the light goes amber by four o'clock, leaves drift down onto the grass, and the first storms of the season test every limb. A lawn raked clear, with tree and yard both in good order, makes for a lovely walk past the house at dusk. Here the canopy and the ground below it are looked after as a single living place.
