Late in winter the Livermore Valley runs yellow with wild mustard between the vineyard rows, and the hills that stay brown all summer turn velvet green after the rains. Las Positas Horticulture shares its name with the arroyo that crosses the north side of town, and it brings horticulture and lawn care to Livermore's yards and gardens. This valley has long grown good things in its gravelly soil, and a garden here does well when it is planted with that ground in mind. Plants chosen for that soil and that sun, a lawn mowed to a soft nap, beds kept in order: that is horticulture practiced close to home. When the mustard fades and the vines leaf out in spring, a garden tended this way grows right along with the valley.
