Irwindale is a town the San Gabriel River built grain by grain, carrying the mountains down as stone and gravel long before anyone dug the quarries that shape its streets today. Pierre Landscape takes care of lawns in this small San Gabriel Valley city, where the Foothill Freeway hums along one side and the San Gabriel Mountains stand close and blue behind the neighborhoods. In a wet spring, the scrub around the Santa Fe Dam basin wakes up green for a few bright weeks, and a well-mown yard nearby carries the same lift. The work is made of small, satisfying things: grass cut to an even height, clippings blown off the drive, a property that says somebody is paying attention. In a place made from river rock, a soft green lawn feels like a gift.
