After the first winter rain, the trails of Daley Ranch smell of wet sage, and the slopes start to green between buckwheat, ceanothus and coast live oak. California's Own Native Landscape takes its name from that native ground and brings its look down from the hills into Escondido yards. The work is lawn and landscape care shaped by the place: trimming, cleanup, and planting beds looked after through the long dry months that follow. Where someone still wants grass underfoot, it gets mowed and edged; where the hillside look belongs, sage and stone carry the yard. When spring sun warms a bed planted for this valley, the bees find it first, and the whole garden seems to have grown up right where it stands.
