Bidwell Park runs some eleven miles up Big Chico Creek, and in late October its sycamores go the color of old brass and let their broad leaves drift off into the current. Chico is a town that measures itself by its trees; people still talk about the Hooker Oak, the giant valley oak that stood in the park until 1977. Chico Tree Service works under that canopy, pairing tree service with lawn care so the ground beneath the branches looks as good as what grows overhead. That means a lawn mowed and trimmed in the shade, borders kept crisp, and the yard left clear enough to see the grass between the falling leaves. Step out on a cool fall morning and the light comes slanting through the limbs onto green that has been looked after all the way to the trunk.
