Worley Welding keeps its shop running through the coldest stretches of a Bighorn Basin winter, and when a hard cold snap follows a storm, the same crew that fixes equipment for the basin's farms and rigs runs a plow down Main Street before the shop doors open. Worland grew up around a crossing of the Bighorn River, and Worley's route still follows that old line of the town, clearing the streets and lots nearest the river before working out toward the newer edges of town. Deep cold here tends to arrive after the snow, not with it, so a plowed street can freeze into ruts overnight if it isn't cleared again by morning. The shop's regular customers, the ones who bring in tractors and trucks for repair all year, are often the same ones whose driveways get plowed first once the welding torches go quiet for the night. On the coldest mornings, Main Street holds a clean, hard-packed line down its center long before the basin warms enough to soften it.
