Freedom Exterior Services covers long distances before most of the reservation is awake, running its plow between homes strung out across the sage flats between Fort Washakie and Arapahoe. Wind off the open range drifts snow across open miles before it ever reaches a driveway, so a short storm here can still mean a long plow route. The crew clears entryways and driveways at homes set well back from the main roads, then works its way toward the tribal offices and community buildings once the residential routes are done. Distances between houses on the reservation are measured in miles more often than blocks, and the truck logs long stretches of open road between one cleared driveway and the next. By midmorning, the driveways along the flats between Fort Washakie and Ethete carry fresh blade marks instead of the night's drift.
