South of town the Wind River Canyon cuts down through rock old enough to have its age posted on roadside signs, the highway threading three tunnels alongside a river that keeps running even when the canyon walls above it are locked in shadow and ice, and Boelens' Well Services runs its plow trucks on the access roads branching off that stretch. A well site tucked into a side draw needs its own short road kept open no matter the weather, since equipment has to reach it on a schedule the canyon's snow doesn't care about. The truck works down through switchbacks where the sun never really reaches in December, clearing just enough width for a service vehicle to pass safely along rock that drops straight to the Bighorn River. Back up on the open bench above the canyon, the same crew clears ordinary driveways where the wind is the bigger problem instead of the shade. It's canyon-and-bench work both, holding open the routes a Hot Springs County winter tries hardest to close.
