Ten sleeps was once a way of measuring the long journey through this country, and the town that took the name sits where Ten Sleep Creek leaves its canyon and joins the Nowood River. In November the first real snow dusts the pale canyon walls behind town, then comes down into the valley in earnest. Nowood Construction, a construction business named for the local river, takes care of snow clearing in Ten Sleep so neighbors can get where they are going. In the blue hour before sunrise, with the canyon still in shadow, a clear way out of the driveway makes a fine beginning.
