By evening, when the North Platte River eases into the slow, quiet stretches it's known for as it passes Saratoga, StillWater Landscape LLC is usually finishing the last driveways of the day on the ranch properties lining the valley on either side. The Platte Valley holds a particular calm after a storm, wind mostly spent by the time it reaches this stretch of river, which makes for cleaner, more even drifts than the open plains see farther north. Working landscape properties in winter means protecting what's underneath, clearing snow without scraping into lawns or beds that will need attention again come spring. A ranch driveway left clean and even, with the river running dark and slow just past the fence line, is a fitting way to close out a day's work in this valley. As full evening sets in, the last plow of the day heads back toward town along a river that barely seems to be moving at all.
