Out on the flat farm ground around Powell, where the Shoshone Project's irrigation canals cut straight lines through the fields and Heart Mountain sits low and long on the horizon, JH Excavation Inc. spends its winters running plows down the same farm lanes it grades and digs the rest of the year. The Bighorn Basin doesn't get buried in feet of snow the way the mountains do, but the wind off the open fields drifts what does fall into hard, packed ridges across driveways and field roads. Clearing those drifts takes the same feel for ground that excavation work does, judging where the frozen dirt ends and the snowpack begins. A farm lane scraped clean out to the county road, with Heart Mountain sitting quiet in the distance, is about as plain a result as this work offers. Every job finishes with the same goal, keeping equipment and vehicles moving through a Powell winter without getting stuck.
