South of Lander the road climbs into Sinks Canyon, where the Popo Agie River famously disappears into the rock and reappears again a quarter mile on, and the same canyon walls that shade the river all summer keep the grade in shadow and ice all winter. Artery Construction clears that stretch and the driveways of the handful of places that keep the canyon road open through the cold months. Ice sets up glassy on a shaded canyon grade in a way it never does on open pavement, so the plow works the switchbacks slower here, dropping sand into the tightest curves rather than trusting the blade alone. Coming back down out of the canyon with a clean grade behind and the last light going amber on the red rock walls above is worth the cold hours it took to get there.
