In late May the flats out toward Kelly go yellow with balsamroot, and the Gros Ventre River comes up loud and brown with the melt off the high country. Nature's Garden reads that as the starting gun: first mows of the year, beds opened up, winter debris pulled off lawns that have been under snow since October. Out past Mormon Row the wind runs unbroken for miles, so a trimmed edge and a cleared bed are small pieces of order set against a very large landscape. The season is brief and everyone here knows it, which is exactly why the weekly cut matters. Green in this valley is temporary and hard-won, and keeping it looking sharp is worth the effort every time.
