Long before the sun clears the Gros Ventre Range to the east, the Teton peaks across the valley are already lit pink while the valley floor below still holds blue shadow, and it's in that gap that MacGregor's crew is out clearing driveways under the cottonwoods. Jackson Hole sits at the bottom of a bowl the mountains keep cold well past the point the rest of the state has started to thaw, so a plow route here can run long into weeks other towns would call spring. Elk drift down out of the hills onto the National Elk Refuge flats in the same stretch that brings the valley's heaviest snow, and clearing a driveway with that herd visible in the middle distance keeps the work from ever feeling routine. By the time the cottonwood bottoms along Flat Creek and the Snake River have finally shed their snow load, the driveways kept open all winter are the paths people actually remember using.
