Hudson's brick storefronts were built for a coal camp that outlasted its mines, and the narrow alleys those buildings left behind still call for equipment that can turn tight rather than wide iron built for open streets. Wind River Stone & Excavation works the blocks between Highway 287 and the Little Wind River bottomland, where overnight cold collects low in the valley and holds ice on the pavement well after the sun has cleared Lander's foothills to the west. Ice forms differently down in that river bottom than it does up on the highway, glazing smooth instead of drifting loose, so the work leans more toward careful scraping than a straight push of the blade. A clean approach to one of the old brick storefronts, snow banked square along the curb instead of piled against the door, is the kind of finish this town still notices.
