Gillette sits high on the Powder River Basin, where the wind doesn't so much blow as arrive, flat and certain, off miles of open sagebrush. Big Horn Excavating runs the same iron here in January that it runs in July — dozer blades swapped for plow blades, tracks that know these gravel lots and building pads by heart. Before the drilling rigs east of town start their first shift, the crew has already carved clean lines through the parking areas and access roads that keep the basin's machinery moving. There's a particular satisfaction in a lot scraped down to bare asphalt while the sky is still more stars than sun. It's blunt, honest work for a blunt, honest stretch of country.
