All summer, M & K Striping & Maintenance paints the crisp yellow lines across the parking lots of Evanston's churches, banks, and storefronts; all winter, those same lots disappear under snow the crew put the lines down to organize in the first place. Clearing one means starting at the same corner every time, working row by row the way the striping was laid down, so the plowed lanes come out roughly where the painted ones will reappear in spring. Evanston's lots empty out fast once a storm starts, giving the crew a wide, open field to work with light traffic to dodge. The trucks push the snow to the low corner of each lot, haul what won't fit, and leave the drive lanes bare well before the businesses open. It's a strange kind of bookend to the summer work — laying down order in July, then digging it back out from under the snow in December.
