The Bear River starts to skin over with ice by December, and the walking path alongside it is one of the first things Hansen Services clears on a snow morning. Dawn on the river is quiet — just the sound of moving water under the ice and a shovel scraping down to the gravel path — before the crew moves on to the driveways and sidewalks waiting in the neighborhoods above the bank. Evanston's cold arrives dry and still some mornings, sharp enough that breath hangs in the air over a freshly cleared walk. The work moves house to house at that same unhurried pace, blade and broom both, until the block is passable again. By midmorning the sun has usually cleared the valley wall, and what was drifted over at seven is just ordinary sidewalk by nine.
