The Wind River runs low and dark through town all winter, threading between the badlands' red hills and the cottonwood flats where log drives once floated railroad ties downstream toward the Union Pacific line. Wind River Stone & Excavation works that same valley floor now, moving rock and grading building sites come summer, then turning to plowed lanes and cleared walks once the valley's first real snowfall arrives to stay. It's quieter here than the bigger towns down toward Cody, fewer streetlights, more stars, and a cold that comes on fast once the sun drops behind the Absarokas. This crew clears driveways and access lanes before that cold locks the day's snow into ice, working stone and ground both with the same plain patience the valley seems to ask for. By morning the lanes are bare enough that the drive out to the highway needs nothing more than a set of tires already on the truck.
