East of Cody the benches open out into sagebrush flats that run for miles before the land folds up into the Bighorns, and it's flat, exposed ground like that where Morris Excavation does some of its longest plow runs. A single pass on those outlying properties can take longer than a whole block of driveways in town, but the crew treats each one the same — cleared to the gate, cleared to the barn, cleared so nobody's stuck a half mile from the house. Sunset out there turns the snow pink and gold for a few minutes before the cold reasserts itself, and more than once this crew has finished a run by that light. Excavation work in the warm months teaches a feel for how ground drains and compacts, and that same feel makes for smarter grading of a plowed pile so it melts off to the side instead of back across the drive. It's unglamorous ground, wide open and often overlooked, and this crew covers it anyway.
