Out along the North Fork, where the highway follows the Shoshone toward Yellowstone's east gate, the light in winter comes up pale over Buffalo Bill Reservoir before it ever reaches Cody's streets. Kip B. Thiel's crew builds out that corridor regularly, and the snow work follows the same ground — driveways and access roads for the cabins and outfitters strung along the river toward Wapiti. It's exposed country, more wind and more drift than town gets, and a road that's clear at seven can be half-buried again by nine. This crew plans for that, running extra passes on the exposed stretches where the canyon funnels the wind. The reservoir stays open water most of the winter, steaming faintly in the cold, while everything around it goes white and gets cleared back down to gravel.
