Morning comes slow to the bottomland where the Coal River folds into the Kanawha, fog sitting on the water until the sun clears the ridge. Straight passes across the flat river-terrace yards, string trimming close along fences and foundations, an edge cut clean where lawn meets sidewalk. By the time the valley heat arrives, the clippings are blown off the drive and the lines are laid down sharp enough to read from the street. It is ordinary work, done carefully, on the lawns of St. Albans and the towns just up and down the river.
