Out past the covered bridge at Barboursville Park, where the Mud River bends slow and the ballfields lie flat between the hills, the grass grows all summer like it has somewhere to be. The Cutting Carters work those long July evenings when the heat finally lets go — mower stripes down one lawn at a time, the trimmer around mailbox posts and fence lines, a sharp edge cut where turf meets drive. By late October the maples along the old village streets turn loose all at once, and the job becomes hauling leaves clear before they mat a yard down for the winter. Cut, trim, edge, haul off: a short list, done until the yard is one a family wants to sit out in.
