Alt's Operation

About Alt's Operation

Out at Badger Prairie the grasses stand tall into November, big bluestem gone copper, seedheads ticking in a wind that has crossed a hundred miles of open Wisconsin farmland — and that same wind, six weeks later, is what packs a Verona driveway shut overnight. Alt's Operation runs on both halves of that year: mowers and trimmers through the long green months, plow and shovel and ice control when the county goes quiet and white. Summer work here is about rhythm — a lawn kept even, edges held true, clippings off the walk before anyone notices they were there. Winter work is about being awake first. Verona is a town that gets up early and drives somewhere, and the aim of the whole operation is that nothing in the yard slows that down.
