God's Lawn

About God's Lawn

Late in the day the light in Trenton goes gold across the hardwood ridges, and a freshly mowed yard holds that color longer than anything else on the property. God's Lawn takes the evening rounds — mowing, string trimming, edging along the walk, the last clippings blown off the drive before dusk. It is unhurried work, and the township gives it plenty to read: oak shade in one corner, full sun in the next, a slope that has to be understood before it is cut. Every yard finishes the same way, with a slow lap of the perimeter to see that the lines meet. Then the crickets start up, the ridge goes blue, and the lawn is done.
