North of town the road toward Lake Nokomis runs between walls of pine, and after a storm the drives back to the lake places are the last thing anybody thinks about until they need them. Nokomis Adventures, LLC plows them. Long gravel driveways, cabin turnarounds, lots and aprons in Tomahawk itself, and walks cleared down to solid footing. Snow arrives here in stubborn layers from December through the March thaw, so the piles get pushed wide early and kept that way. There is a particular satisfaction in a lake road drive opened before daylight, the pines still loaded, the way in clean.
