The land under Sussex was left here by ice — low drumlin backs, wet kettles, clay that holds water into May. Helmrick's Landscaping starts each April with the unglamorous half: raking the beds out, hauling off the winter's dead stalks and matted leaves, taking the first cut low enough to wake the turf up. After that it turns into rhythm — weekly mowing, trimming around the trees and the light post, edges recut so the mulch stays where it belongs. Hostas come up under the maples, the shrubs get their shape back, and by June the yard reads as one whole piece instead of a list of chores. Wisconsin hands out about six good green months, and the work is making every one of them count.
