Late November on Superior Bay: the last boats work the harbor, skim ice starts collecting in the slips off Barker's Island, and the wind picks up an edge it will keep for five months. Harborview handles the snow end of things for properties around town — plowing driveways and lots, clearing walkways and entries, opening a place back up after the storm, and putting down sand or salt where the ice sets in. From this side of the water you can watch a squall crossing from Duluth a good twenty minutes before it lands, which is about all the warning anybody gets. The work is plain in the telling: be there early, take it down to pavement, come back when it blows in again. Simple to say, and worth doing right up until April.
