Snow Plowing

About Snow Plowing

East of Sun Prairie the land rides up in long glacial drumlins, and when the wind crosses them at two in the morning it packs the drifts hard against anything standing still. Snow Plowing is out in that hour, a plain name over plain work. Blade down at the top of the drive, three passes, the ridge at the road cut through, the apron opened wide enough that a car can swing in without a running start. Walks get shoveled to the step and salted where the meltwater will refreeze by dawn. Nobody watches it happen, and that is rather the point: by the time the buses run, the driveway looks like the storm skipped the house entirely.
