This peninsula is built on dolomite, and you can read it everywhere in winter — ledges under the snow, old stone fence lines rising through drift along the field edges. Door County Masonry turns to snow work once the ground freezes, plowing drives and lots around Sturgeon Bay, clearing walks and steps, and putting salt where shade keeps ice from letting go. Cold here is patient; a north wind off the bay can hold a lot at ten degrees for a week straight. Clearing right the first time means the next storm has somewhere to go. A drive cut wide and square, right down to the pavement, is the whole ambition.
