Lake Kegonsa lies a few miles north of Stoughton, and on August mornings the fog lifts off it and drifts down over the fields before the sun burns it off. American Outdoor Services starts in that hour, when the grass is still heavy and the mower leaves a dark, wet track behind it. Mowing, trimming and cleanups out here are ordinary work done to a standard you can read from the road — banded stripes, a tidy verge, nothing left lying in the beds. Winter runs the other direction: wind arrives across open ground with nothing to slow it, and drifts build where the fields meet the driveways. Plowing and shoveling then is a matter of getting there early and getting it down to bare surface, so the day can start on time.
