The Ice Age Trail begins its long eastward run right here at St. Croix Falls, and the ground it starts on is glacier-made — sand, gravel and stubborn turf that dries out fast once July arrives. Spartan Technical Landscaping and Systems works with that ground instead of against it, mowing at the height the heat allows, trimming, edging, keeping clippings moving off the blade canopy. Afternoons come up hot along the valley; the crew is generally ahead of the worst of it, finished while the shade still reaches across the yards. Come evening the lawn holds its color, the borders are cut true, and the walk has a real line beside it. Turf that survives a northwest Wisconsin August has been paid attention to, and it shows.
