In February the Slinger Super Speedway lies under a smooth white sheet, quiet as a hayfield, and the village slows down to match it. A Cut Above doesn't slow down: driveways plowed, walkways and steps opened, the ridge the county truck leaves at the end of a drive pushed back where it belongs, salt on whatever turned glassy overnight. Kettle Moraine country writes its own weather, and a squall can come off the ridges and lay down three inches while you eat supper. Pulling up to a drive that's already been cleared is one of the better feelings a Wisconsin winter hands out. That's what the route exists for, storm after storm, right through to April.
