Every April the lake sturgeon come up the Wolf River to spawn below the Shawano dam, and half the town walks down to watch — a fair sign the season has actually turned. Howell's Lawn Care starts its year around then, when the frost lets go and the grass finds its color again. From that first cut through the last one the routine holds: mowing, trimming the edges by hand where the mower cannot reach, edging drives and sidewalks, and cleanups to bookend spring and fall. Shawano yards swing from soggy in May to crisp in August, and the cutting height comes up with the heat so the turf keeps its footing. A lawn finished right doesn't announce itself; it just looks settled.
