Wentzel's Yard Care

About Wentzel's Yard Care

North of Duluth the land climbs, and Rice Lake takes its winter early — bands of snow drifting in off Superior long after the city below has stopped counting inches. Wentzel's Yard Care works those mornings, headlights swinging across birch and tamarack while the lake road is still dark. A plow pass down a long gravel driveway, a shovel width cut to the door, a scatter of salt where the boots go: that is the shape of the day. There's a plain satisfaction in a yard that looks handled at first light, the banks squared off and the mailbox reachable again. Neighbors around Rice Lake, Hermantown and the north side of Duluth wake up to a driveway that simply lets them leave.
