A clipper coming down out of Alberta gives Rice Lake a few hours' notice and then arrives at two in the morning, dry and fast and blowing. Marty Becker Snowplows works those hours, headlights swinging up one drive and down the next while the town sleeps through it. By the time the buses run, the approaches are open and the banks are set back from the mailbox where the carrier can reach. Plowing is not complicated work, but doing it before dawn, in the dark, at fifteen below, is a decision somebody has to make every single storm. Marty Becker makes it, all winter, around Rice Lake.
